List of items needed to prepare a dish.
1 regular-sized bag of northern dried beans (16 oz)
3 to 5 large ham hocks (or a large ham bone)
1 onion cut into small pieces
Sufficient water to completely cover the beans.
Add salt and pepper according to your preference.
1/3 cup of brown sugar.
Instructions
First, start by going through the beans to take out any rocks or dirt. Wash the beans well with cold water.
Next, in a slow cooker, mix together the cleaned beans, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and pieces of ham hocks or ham (cut into big pieces).
Step 3: Add water until the beans are covered by about 2 inches.
Step 4: Put a lid on and cook on high for approximately 2 hours. Next, lower the heat and cook for an additional 4-5 hours until the beans are soft.
Step 5: Take out the ham hocks or ham, shred the meat, and remove any bones or tough parts.
Step 6: Put the shredded meat back in the slow cooker and mix in the brown sugar.
Step 7: If necessary, remove approximately 1 cup of the liquid before mixing in the brown sugar. This will help you change the consistency to how you prefer. Stir gently to mix.
Step 8: Put the soup in separate bowls and enjoy it!
