SOUP WITH BEANS AND HAM

Slow Cooker Ham and Bean Soup

A hearty and comforting dish made with tender beans, flavorful ham, and a touch of sweetness. Perfect for a cozy meal!

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 oz) bag dried Great Northern beans
  • 3–5 large ham hocks (or a large ham bone)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • Water, enough to cover the beans
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar

Instructions

1. Prepare the Beans

  1. Spread out the beans on a flat surface and check for any rocks or debris.
  2. Rinse the beans thoroughly with cold water.

2. Combine Ingredients

  1. In a slow cooker, add the cleaned beans, chopped onion, and ham hocks or ham pieces.
  2. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Add Water

  1. Pour enough water into the slow cooker to cover the beans by about 2 inches.

4. Cook the Soup

  1. Cover the slow cooker with a lid and cook on high for 2 hours.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for 4–5 hours, or until the beans are tender.

5. Shred the Ham

  1. Remove the ham hocks or ham from the slow cooker.
  2. Shred the meat, discarding any bones or tough pieces, and return the meat to the slow cooker.

6. Adjust Consistency

  1. If the soup is too watery, remove about 1 cup of liquid before adding the brown sugar.
  2. Stir in the brown sugar and mix gently to combine. Adjust seasoning as needed.

7. Serve and Enjoy

  1. Ladle the soup into bowls and serve warm.
  2. Pair with crusty bread or cornbread for a complete meal.

Tips for Success

  • For extra flavor, let the beans soak overnight before cooking.
  • If using a ham bone, ensure there’s enough meat left on it for shredding.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a slight kick.
